Griz dominate lightning-shortened opener by: Gordon Terpe of MontanaGrizzlies.Com If there were any problems with the coaching transition for the Montana Grizzlies, they didn't show today. The Griz jumped out to a three-touchdown lead in just over two minutes en route to a 73-2 drubbing of the Western State Mountaineers. In fact, only the weather seemed able to slow down the explosive Griz. A lightning delay held up play for over an hour and led to both teams agreeing to forgo the final 5:30 of the first half. Montana dominated almost all major statistical categories. UM led in rushing yards, 103-39, passing yards, 262-55, and total offense, 365-94. Montana also averaged 24.7 yards per punt return and dominated special teams. Montana also tied an NCAA record by returning four interceptions for touchdowns. Western State did lead time of possession 39:58-20:02, a fact that is explained by Montana scoring quickly from good field position and being unable to chew up clock with extended drives.
